ONLINE WORKSHOP
A Season with Jane Austwen
Sunday, September 15, 2024
1-2:30 p.m. CDT in Zoom
NEW MOUNTAIN DULCIMER WORKSHOP (September 15, 2024): In the Regency period, the colder months brought in preparations for “the season,” the time when major balls and social events were held and when young women would make their debut into adult society. Autumn into winter would be a time for dress fittings, travel plans, and great general anticipation! My next workshop will share selections of music connected with Jane Austen novels or their film adaptations: the Irish melody “Robin Adair” (from the novel “Emma”) and the John Playford dances “Grimstock” (from the 1995 miniseries “Pride and Prejudice”) and “Childgrove” (from the 2007 film “Northanger Abbey”). Please bring a capo! Arrangements will be suitable for players at the intermediate level. Registration will be $15 per participant. I will send you a Zoom meeting link and a PayPal link (or Square invoice upon request) once you RSVP by messaging me on Facebook or emailing me at [email protected].
Also, please see my "Letter to Friends Regarding Recordings of Workshops" (4-28-2024).

Seats are still available in the following classes:
"Flower Power Sing-Along Hour" with Mountain Dulcimer (Saturday, Session 5, Level 1 - Absolute Beginner)
Meet the mountain dulcimer and let it sing along with you on familiar folk songs: "Down in the Valley," "Kumbaya," and "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore." Playing songs you already know well (or which are fairly simple) can help you to focus on technique with less worry about learning the songs. These tunes will help you with learning the fretboard, fingerwalking, and alternating your picking and strumming direction. NV Border Ballads: Child Ballads from the English-Scottish Border (Saturday, Session 3, Level 3 - Intermediate)
Storytelling songs have long flourished on the border between England and Scotland, a place fraught with conflict as well as a fascination with fate. Both our selections are Child Ballads, meaning they are from ballad traditions recorded by Francis James Child: "Johnny O’ Braidislee" (#114) and "Sir Patrick Spens" (#58). Please bring a capo! NV |
Land of Rest: Peaceful Hymn Melodies (Friday, Session 6, Level 2 - Novice, Mountain Dulcimer)
Find peace for your soul and steady growth in your playing skills with the following traditional hymns: shape-note hymn "Land of Rest/New Prospect" (basis of the popular hymn "Jerusalem, My Happy Home"); "Beech Spring" (also known as "Healing River of the Spirit"), and the traditional Scottish melody of "The Summons" ("Kelvingrove"). Our hymns will help familiarize you with the fretboard, practice alternating picking direction, and gently exercise some basic chords. NV Elegance of O’Carolan: Harp Melodies for Mountain Dulcimer (Saturday, Session 4, Level 4 - Upper-Intermediate)
The Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan is credited with some of the most elegantly graceful melodies in Irish tradition. These songs, many of which were originally dedicated to wealthy patrons, are especially well suited for special occasions such as weddings and other formal parties. Our selections "The Princess Royal," "Planxty Irwin," and "Fanny Power" will showcase the importance of smooth chording and economy of motion. Please bring a capo! NV |
